Did you know that approximately 75% of Americans over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease? Naturally, gum disease could cause minor problems—such as swollen or bleeding gums—or other serious conditions such as bone or tooth loss. Sadly, gum disease can be difficult to identify. In fact, many people aren’t even aware of what gum disease is. In fact, some claim that 60% of individuals don’t know what gum disease is or how it can be treated.
As you may have heard, gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, typically caused by bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Sadly, if gum disease isn’t treated, it can lead to infections in your gums and bloodstream, and can lead to tooth loss.
While gum disease is concerning, there are a few symptoms you should be able to recognize before your gum disease gets too bad. Again, if you’re able to address your gum disease early, you can prevent it from causing serious damage. Some of these symptoms include bleeding gums, red or swollen gums, consistent bad breath, and a bad taste in your mouth. Sadly, more severe symptoms include a receding gum line and even shifting teeth.
Unfortunately, gum disease can be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, or poor nutrition. Fortunately, our dentist can examine the health of your teeth, and develop a plan to help you. Luckily, if you brush and floss well, you can stop bacteria from spreading and may be able to reverse gum disease. Similarly, antibiotics may be useful if your gum disease is severe enough.
